How To Prep Your Grill For The Summer

May 28, 2025 02:06PM ● By Elise Renaud

Summer is right around the corner which means that burger and hot dog season is almost here! Before you fire up the grill and throw some ribs on, make sure that it is ready after the long winter.

According to the BBQ Depot, you’ll want to start by cleaning the grill. Make sure the gas is turned off before beginning, remove all the parts from the inside of the grill, and clean the underside of the lid. BBQ Depot recommends using a razor or putty knife to scrape off built-up debris and grease from the firebox. Next, vacuum all the debris that has fallen in the bottom of the firebox so it doesn’t burn through.

Clean the stainless grates with a degreaser or stainless cleaner. BBQ Depot says to let it sit for a bit before using a stainless steel scrubber. Learn how to clean cast iron grates here.

BBQ Depot says cleaning your burners is a good way to prevent fires. Remove the burners and use a stainless steel scrubber to get rid of the debris.

“If you have cast iron grill burners, clean them first. Then, rub a high heat-resistant oil on the cast iron. This will help prevent rust and drying out,” the website said.

Before reassembling the grill, clean the outside with soapy water before drying with a microfiber towel.
