Peter Yarrow & Noel Paul Stookey (of Peter, Paul and Mary)

Folk music icons reunite for an evening of song and social change. Known best for his years with Peter, Paul and Mary, Peter Yarrow is a lifelong musician and activist. During their career, the trio scored a dozen Top 40 hits including Leaving on a Jet Plane, Blowin’ in the Wind, and Peter’s composition Puff (the Magic Dragon). They toured extensively for nearly 10 years and Yarrow remained an active participant in the civil rights and anti-war movements of the late 1960s and early ‘70s. After a hiatus, the trio reunited and toured continuously. In 2000, Yarrow formed the nonprofit organization Operation Respect. From his roots with the iconic folk trio, singer, songwriter, and activist Noel Paul Stookey has continued to spread his gospel of melding the spiritual to the practical in 45 albums over his illustrious career. Noel grew up in the Midwest, moved to New York City when he was 20, and by 1963, when Martin Luther King delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, he was there with Peter and Mary to perform Blowin’ in the Wind and If I Had a Hammer. His career has taken him from the coffee house to the White House and back again. Music to Life is a national nonprofit founded by Noel Paul Stookey and his daughter, Liz Stookey Sunde, to build activism through music. MTL seeks to revitalize music to meet the challenges of the modern world and revolutionize the role activist artists can play in accelerating social change. At LOH, Yarrow and Stookey will be joined by two next-gen MTL activist artists from Maine: rootsy singer-songwriter Emilia Dahlin and Myles Bullen, the self-proclaimed “sensitive rapper” and poet. Proceeds from this performance directly underwrite Music to Life’s work in the Upper Valley and Northern New England to launch Musicians as Mentors–a program that helps musicians and advocates develop creative programs for homeless and at-risk youth in our rural communities.
