5 Christmas Traditions From Around The World

Dec 23, 2025 09:52PM ● By Elise Renaud

Christmas is a festive holiday around the world, but each country and region celebrates it a little differently. Let’s take a look at some unique traditions, and who knows, maybe you’ll want to add one to your yearly tradition:

Krampus

In the Alpe Region - Austria, Germany, Bavaria, etc. - Saint Nicolas has an opposite: Krampus. He’s a goat-like demon creature that punishes naughty boys and girls. According to Travel + Leisure, it dates back to the Middle Ages, “where people would dress up in his likeness and chase children down the street in a menacing way, threatening to beat them for not behaving,” the website said. The modern-day version of Krampus is celebrated as a parade.

Las Posadas

In Mexico, Christmas comes with a reenactment of Mary and Joseph’s search for lodging amid their journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem. According to Britannica, “Las Posadas has countless regional variations, but commonly features nightly processions that, for many Roman Catholics, are undertaken as a novenario (novena)—a spiritual devotion of reciting a set form of prayer for nine consecutive days—that concludes Christmas Eve.”

KFC

Japan celebrates with an American classic: KFC. According to the BBC, “Getting the KFC special Christmas dinner often requires ordering it weeks in advance, and those who didn’t will wait in line, sometimes for hours.” The phenomenon began in the 1970s as a marketing campaign of ‘Kentucky for Christmas’ and was an instant success.

Santa Claus is coming to town… on a camel

In Kenya, Santa isn’t visiting houses in a red sleigh pulled by eight reindeer; he visits on a camel, according to Okoa Refuge.

Beer for Santa?

Australian Santa has an upgrade from the North American tradition of milk and cookies. Our friends Down Under leave Jolly Old Saint Nick a cold beer to help him cool down from the summer heat, according to Yahoo News.

“The weather is hot in Australia's December, so kicking back with a glass of milk when it's steamy may not go down the same way as a brewski. That said, if there is no beer in the fridge, they may opt for a glass of wine or even some sherry,” the website said.
