How To Combat Springtime Allergies

Apr 29, 2025 10:10AM ● By Elise Renaud

If the sneezing isn’t giving it away, spring is in the air, and so is the pollen. For the lucky ones, they don’t have to deal with itchy noses, sneezing, congestion, and the overall feeling of being off. If you’re in the unlucky bunch you’re probably looking for a remedy or two to make you feel better.

According to the Mayo Clinic, the best way to combat allergies is to reduce your exposure to triggers. This can mean staying indoors more - especially when the pollen count is high; avoiding cutting the grass or gardening; and taking off clothes that are covered in allergens and rinsing off in the shower. Cleaning indoors to remove allergens and run a dehumidifier can help.

If the symptoms are already showing, the Mayo Clinic suggests taking oral antihistamines, corticosteroid nasal sprays, cromolyn sodium nasal spray, and oral decongestants. Another option is flushing your sinuses.

“Rinsing your nasal passages with saline solution (nasal irrigation) is a quick, inexpensive and effective way to relieve nasal congestion. Rinsing directly flushes out mucus and allergens from your nose,” the Mayo Clinic says on its website.
