5 Places to Celebrate St. Patty's Day In The Upper Valley

Mar 01, 2023 04:04PM ● By Stephanie Hatley
March 17 is a fun celebration for many people. Even though St. Patrick was the foremost patron saint of Ireland and the day began as a Christian feast day in the early 17th century, St. Patrick’s Day is now enjoyed worldwide and is known more for four-leaf clovers, cute little leprechauns, and wearing the color green.

Locally, there are a few places where you can gather with friends to enjoy the holiday. Sip an Irish brew, savor Irish fare, or participate in a local fun run. Let’s take a closer look!

Salt Hill Pub

Salt Hill Pub has been serving the Lebanon community since 2003 when brothers Joe and Josh Tuohy started offering Irish American–inspired food, craft beers, and live music. In 2007, they opened a second location in Newport, and in 2015, they reopened the Salt Hill Shanty in Newbury. Named after their grandparents’ neighborhood in Galway, Ireland, Salt Hill Pub serves homemade Beef and Guinness Stew, Fish and Chips, Pub Burgers, and more. All three locations will host their annual St. Patrick’s Day Party, an all-nighter featuring Corned Beef and Cabbage along with other Irish entrees, Irish dancing, and live Irish music. If you’re looking for an authentic Irish environment, head on over to one of the three locations this St. Patrick’s Day!

McGrath’s Irish Pub

Located at the Inn at Long Trail in Killington, McGrath’s Irish Pub was the first to sell Guinness on draft in Vermont and continues to sell the most. You’ll also find the state’s largest selection of Irish whiskies. Besides the alcohol, guests enjoy the salads, sandwiches, and burgers as well as traditional Irish fare like Shepherd’s Pie, McGrath’s Hash Bowl, Guinness Stew, and an Irish Reuben. Don’t forget to leave room for Double Chocolate Irish Soda Bread Pudding for dessert!

Shamrock Shuffle

The Lebanon Recreation, Arts & Parks Department will host the 22nd annual Shamrock Shuffle on Saturday, March 18. This event benefits further park development and enhancements as well as adult and youth programs. Participants can register for a 5K Road Race or a 1-Mile Fun Run. The Salt Hill Pub is one of the sponsors, and everyone who registers is entered into a drawing for a $25 gift card to the Irish pub. If you’re looking for a way to support the local community and get your blood pumping this St. Patrick’s Day, go to the website to register today.

St. Patrick’s Day Shamrock Hunt

Another local venue sponsoring a St. Patrick’s Day event is Ragged Mountain Resort in Danbury. Organized by their Ski Patrol department, the Shamrock Hunt is an event for all ages. All day on Saturday, March 18, visitors can search for hidden shamrocks throughout the mountain on all open terrain. Once you find one, you can show a patroller to receive a prize. Enjoy a day on the ski slopes while having a little bit of green fun.

Norwich Inn

Finally, if you’re looking for a weekend getaway, head up to the Norwich Inn. Not only will you enjoy a comfortable night’s stay in the luxurious accommodations, but you can also enjoy St. Patrick’s Day at the brewery. There are currently more than 50 different craft beers that are rotated on tap at the pub at the inn. They may not be Irish, but you’ll enjoy a taste of Vermont while supporting this local business. Book your romantic getaway, girls’ weekend, or family vacation today because the Norwich Inn is a local favorite.

No matter what kind of event you’re looking for this St. Patrick’s Day weekend, local businesses have a variety of activities. Enjoy family fun at Ragged Mountain Resort or a romantic weekend at the Norwich Inn. Get some exercise while enjoying the outdoors in Lebanon or Danbury. Grab a group of friends and hit the Irish pubs to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in true Irish flair. Whatever you’re looking for, make your plans now!
