Local Boy Scout, Abe Healey, Helps Retire Tattered American Flags

Oct 14, 2022 12:37PM ● By Stephanie Hatley
Fifteen-year-old Abe Healey, a student at Hanover High School and member of Boy Scout Troop 45, wants the people of his town to understand the importance of the American flag. How did he do this? It all started when he was inspired by other Eagle projects around the country. Abe decided that his Eagle project would be to help members of the community retire their American flags.

The first step was to design and build the containers to collect and hold the flags. He also had to collect the materials, which was possible thanks to generous donations of supportive businesses in the community. Abe organized a workday with his troop where they built and painted the boxes. On October 8, Abe placed boxes in the Hanover Co-op locations and Howe Library. These local businesses graciously agreed to house the boxes in permanent locations.

Anyone who wants to retire a tattered American flag is welcome to go to the nearest location and place the flag in the box. You’ll see the boxes—they’re about three feet tall—at the entrance with a sign that reads “Tattered Flag DropBox.”

Congrats to Abe on a job well done!
