One of the most challenging yet exhilarating races is now less than a month away, and, as the races draw near, prices rise for signing up. The Vermont Spartan Event Weekend is September 10 to 11 and includes the Sprint 5K (20 obstacles), Beast 21K (30 obstacles), Ultra 50K (60 obstacles), Kids Race 1-3K plus obstacles, and Hurricane Heat 4 HR. The race is a series of obstacle races of varying distances and difficulty ranging from 3 miles to marathon distances. The first Spartan Race event was held in 2010 at the Catamount Outdoor center in Williston, Vermont.  Expect steep slopes, off-trail descents, massive climbs, and chilly swims at this legendary venue.

All finishers receive a T-shirt, medal, and professional photos, and every registration comes with access to your Spartan account to track your tickets, race results, photos, teams, and challenges.

So, what should you bring? Your ID, barcode (in your Spartan account), towel, waterproof bag and extra clothes/shoes, sunscreen and hydration, and headlamps (recommended for later start times), and be sure to wear performance gear. Do not bring outside food and drinks, pets, and a negative attitude! Please plan to arrive 90 minutes before your start time, giving you plenty of time to park, pick up your registration packet, drop your stuff at bag check, and get warmed up. Registration typically opens at 6:30am. Waves of 250 racers will be released every 15 minutes. Your exact start time is listed on your barcode and will be posted in your Spartan account about 10 days prior to the event date.

The race day program and documents are emailed to racers and posted to the FAQ on the Spartan website about seven days prior to the event. The race day program includes the updated event schedule, course and festival details, parking instructions, and more. Exclusive hotel rates for racers are also available.

Finishers earn a Badass Medal, a trifecta medal wedge piece, a craft finisher T-shirt, a free Mike’s Hard Lemonade Seltzer, a free Athletic Brewing Company beverage for nonalcoholic drinkers, a free bottle of AC+ION Alkaline Water, free professional photos, a cold can of FITAID, and bragging rights.

Are you fit enough to race? As its website indicates, if you’re in good enough health to exercise, you’re ready to try Spartan. You don’t have to run the whole way, and failing obstacles isn’t a crime. Spartan helps you prepare with training content and local workouts so you’re ready to tackle any obstacle. There’s never a perfect time for anything, so get out there and challenge yourself. Have fun, meet new people, and become addicted to this amazing sport.

Registration and details for all races can be found at www.spartanrace.com.
