Prep for Tax Season with These Tips from Lebanon Based Patricia Morse, CPA

Mar 11, 2022 12:35PM ● By Tracey Hull

Financial planning and decisions can simultaneously feel tedious and overwhelming, and tax season is no exception. Whether you file your taxes online or through a tax preparer, maximizing your return and filing correctly sometimes feels like throwing spaghetti and a wall and hoping it sticks or hoping you filed correctly and avoid being audited. Additionally, reviewing your income, bills, receipts, and forms can be a vulnerable experience.

Patricia Morse, CPA, has a down-to-earth approach and easy conversation style that immediately brings ease, comfort, and security to this sometimes daunting experience. “I find it hard to say no sometimes because I want to help people, and I like to keep my staff busy.” This became more clear as she spoke about the dedication and loyalty of her current clients, some reaching into their 80s and beyond.

It is clear and through her website that she values the individual behind the finances, and this keeps her clients coming back year after year. “(Some clients) don’t need me to do their taxes (because they are so simple), but they keep insisting on coming back.”

“I’m not trying to take people’s money,” she says about those with simpler taxes. Instead, she encourages them to use the free and low-cost tools such as those available on her website instead of paying for personalized services if they can. She also encourages people to sign up for her newsletter available on the website, which is filled with helpful information about taxes, financial planning, and so much more.

She has been serving the community since the early 1980s, opening this firm in 1985. She is active in the local community, including being on the Board of Trustees of the Lebanon Opera House, and is a member of the Carter Witherall Center’s finance committee. In fact, the beautiful photograph of fall leaves on her website is from her own backyard, a view we can all appreciate.

Her staff consists of seasoned tax professionals who have been well vetted for the position, including Stacy Young (with the firm since 1994) and Kathy Schellong (with the firm since 2001). Together, the staff at Patricia Morse, CPA, have extensive experience, dedication, and knowledge of all things finance, including QuickBooks for personal and business use, bookkeeping, tax preparation, and estate and trust planning, just to name a few. Their tax preparation and planning services “guide clients through tax planning and preparation decisions with strategies that minimize tax liabilities, maximize cash flow, and keep you on track to your financial goals.”

Many questions regarding taxes, financial planning, or accounting can be answered on her website, “I have a link for that!” which makes working with Patricia even more comfortable. She and her team are well organized, timely, patient, and kind.

If you prefer to call the firm instead of using the website, you will likely be greeted on the other end by Lisa Matthews, who has been with the firm since 2011. You can also send a message directly through her website or send an email directly to [email protected].

Some tips for tax preparation include:

• Get your records together in advance, including your W-2s and 1099s, as well as copies of these files for backups.

• Make sure you have the right forms, which are available on the IRS.gov website under Forms and Publications

• Give yourself time and take breaks - this can save you from making mistakes

• Double-check your math and social security number to make sure you’re getting the right refund and the right amount

• Get direct deposit, so your refund goes right to your account. This can cut the time to receive your refund in half.
