Try Something New: Learn How + Where to Ice Fish Near the Upper Valley

Feb 21, 2022 11:52AM ● By Rose Terami

Ice fishing is a popular winter pastime in places where water bodies freeze over and where temperatures stay low enough to support some weight. Midwinter in Vermont and New Hampshire is the perfect time to engage in the sport and learn about different local fish species.

In Vermont, residents and non-residents over the age of 15 must hold a fishing license in order to fish, no matter the time of year. For specific hunting licenses, you may need to pass a safety training course beforehand.

In New Hampshire, fishing licenses are also required for residents and non-residents over the age of 16. In both states, there are regulations that prohibit ice fishing in certain areas and guidelines for species of fish that cannot be hunted or are subject to catch-and-release rules.

With this in mind, it’s a good idea to double-check state requirements before you go ice fishing, and if you’re a beginner, consider signing up for a guided experience to learn the ins and outs from a professional.
