Guide To Safely Visiting Your Local Farmers Markets

Jul 07, 2020 01:26PM ● By Gabrielle Varela
Days at the Farmers Market this summer might not look like those of the past but there has never been a better time to support your community and its local farms. Here is our guide to your safest way to get your hands on some fresh farm picks.

Cover Up
Make sure your mask is packed and ready to go! Markets in the Upper Valley require face coverings.

Check Your Flow
Lebanon Farmers Market has extended hours and organized a flow system to minimize crowding. Norwich Farmers Market has expanded their front parking lot into a North Campus to allow all the businesses proper social distance between stalls.

Scope the Area for Sanitizer
Many markets have installed sanitizing stations at designated entrances. If you forgot your personal stash, don’t worry! With the influx of homemade sanitizers, there is a likelihood you'll be able to pick up some from a vendor. Check homeopathic or distilleries like SILO.

Sign Up for Curbside Pick Up
Want farm-fresh but not ready for even a socially distant crowd? Many farmer's markets encourage calling ahead or signing up for CSA pick up to be sure you get all your market staples while also reducing foot traffic.

Check Out Payment Options
Many markets may not take cash for safety precautions. Norwich Farmers Market has implemented a coin system in place of credit cards. However, some vendors still take them. Check in to be sure you have the right form of payment at check out.

Be a Good Neighbor
Shop for an elderly neighbor or those with compromised health for a community that takes care of each other. If you’re feeling sick, ask a friend to shop for you.

Leave Fido at Home
While the risk of animals spreading Covid-19 is low, the CDC reports dogs are listed as animals that can be infected, making even the goodest boys at risk. Treat your pup as you would other people during this time and limit contact to keep everyone safe!

BYOB
Bring your own BAG. State regulations allow reusable bags at the market. It’s a good way to control where germs have been and what they may carry and it’s still environmentally friendly.

Eat At Home
Some markets have limited recycling and waste bins and others reduced any seating they had to encourage shoppers to take their goods elsewhere. Head home to feast or find a secluded picnic spot!

Be Kind
Many businesses have struggled to adapt quickly to new regulations as they are announced. Your understanding and support matter as we are all learning this new normal together and things may not be seamless!
