5 Tips: How to Prepare for Inevitable Spring Allergies

Apr 28, 2020 12:22PM ● By Melanie Heisinger
Allergies can be a pain to deal with, but we've put together a few tips from different sources that will hopefully help keep the sneezing at bay.

According to Family Allergy, Spring allergy symptoms are typical of respiratory allergies, these include:
  • Sinus Congestion
  • Runny Nose
  • Post-Nasal Drip
  • Sneezing
  • Coughing
  • Itchy or Watery Eyes
"Determining what is causing your symptoms is the first step towards relief, in the case of spring allergies there are several things you can do to help ease your symptoms," Family Allergy advises.

1. Start Treatment

Starting to take medication early helps jumpstart the prevention of symptoms, according to WebMD. "When you use meds early you may ease your symptoms all spring," says Bela B. Faltay, MD, chief of service of allergy at Akron General Health System, in Ohio. "With a week or 2 lead time, you'll feel better all season."

2. Start Monitoring Pollen Reports

This might seem over the top, but it comes as a highly recommended way to keep allergies down. Flonase advises, "Keep on eye on local pollen counts, so you’ll know when allergy season kicks off in your area."

3. Start Closing the Windows

This is a tough one, as Spring brings some lovely weather, but keeping windows closed is a must if you have allergies, according to Every Day Health

4. Start Cleaning

Spring cleaning has its name for a reason! It also is a great way to limit the amount of buildup your home has. Bustle says, "When it's warm enough, gear up and scrub down your house. Clean out your vacuum, and then vacuum everything you can reach — especially carpet."

5. Start Checking Your Air Filter

If you have an air filter, making sure things are switched out at the time they're supposed to - typically every 3 months - this will help keep the sniffles to a minimum. Family Allergy also notes, "Consider other environmental control products as well, both zippered pillowcases and mattress encasements can help reduce dust mites and even have shown to help with pet allergies."
