Living Falls Best Life: Apple Picking, Corn Mazes, Fall Festials & Where to Find the Perfect Pumpkin

Fall is here, the foliage is spectacular, and the weather is crisp and comfortable. It’s a great time to get outdoors and take advantage of all the things the season has to offer.

Many local farms are offering apple picking, pumpkin patches, corn mazes and hayrides. Plus, wonderful ciders and cider donuts, maple syrup and maple flavored goodies, pies, locally-made crafts and other items can be found in their farm stores.

And, be sure to take part in the wonderful festivals, Halloween celebrations, and the myriad of other autumnal activities for people of all ages. There are also plenty of hiking, picnicking, biking and camping opportunities to be found in and around Woodstock, VT.


FARMS AND ORCHARDS:


Moore's Orchards

Family run Moore’s Orchard is a great place to pick a wide variety of old and new style apples and, with its scenic views, it’s also a perfect spot to take pictures to remember the outing. Throughout the year, they also offer blueberries, annual and perennial plants, and registered Angus cattle. They also produce maple syrup for purchase.

Wellwood Orchards

During apple season, the family owned and operated Wellwood Orchards offers wagon rides out to the orchard for pick your own apples. Or, browse their country store to stock up on already picked apples and produce. Besides the many varieties of apples, and depending on the time of year, you can also purchase pumpkins, squash, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, peaches, and plums. There are also fresh baked items, honey, Vermont maple syrup, locally made

hand-crafted gifts and other wonderful goodies. Apple cider is pressed fresh every Friday during apple season and available until sold out. And cider donuts are available on the weekends beginning Labor Day weekend. Another great bonus is their petting zoo with bunnies, baby cows, chickens, goats, pheasants and even peacocks!  Lots of fun for the whole family.

Sugarbush Farm

A scenic road leads you right to the 500-acre Luce family farm known as Sugar Bush Farm, which has been in business for over three generations. They are known for their 15 varieties of waxed cheeses and four grades of pure maple syrup, both of which are made right on the farm. You can view the work room to see where the cheese is hand wrapped and hand waxed, and there’s also a tour of the sugarhouse to see where the syrup is actually made and a video of the syrup making process. The farm store is also full of mustards, jams, spreads and locally made meats. During the warmer months, you’ll be able to visit the farm animals. Open all year round, the farm is located right outside central Woodstock. With the vibrant leaves and the rural setting, it’s also a great place to take family pictures.

Fitch Family Farm

The Fitch Family Farm boasts a strong history and picturesque landscape. The family has lived and farmed on this land since the 1770s. They raise Scottish Highlander cattle and have two Belgian work horses named Rock and Prince. It is with these horses that they offer carriage and sleigh rides. Rolling along at around 5 mph, their carriage rides offer a chance to slow down and appreciate the nature that surrounds us. The Belgian work horses will take you on the carriage through scenic back roads of Cornish to a sweeping view over the valley. Stories and a history of the land will be told along the way.

Riverview Farm

Owned and operated by the Franklin family for over 30 years, Riverview Farm has over 1,600 apple trees with 15 different apple varieties, fall raspberries, and fresh pressed homemade cider.  The pumpkins, gourds and squash can be found in every shape and size and their corn maze is a masterpiece and fun for all ages. The retail barn, with dried flowers and ornamental corn hanging from the ceiling beams, is charming and packed with more goodies ranging from jams, local honey, maple syrup and cheese.

Hathaway Farm & Corn Maze

September through October from 10:00 to 5:00

In the big 13-acre corn maze they have clues, punches to try and find, a relaxing grassy knoll to enjoy and four big bridges that lift you up so you can see over the corn field! Try out the mini maze for the young folks with a story walk and fun finger game where you find stations throughout the maze. The play area has many different kinds of farm games including the giant corn pit, John Deere pedal go carts, a sand box, tether balls, duck races and a new horse stable, plus a lot more. Visit all the animals in the livestock barn (donkeys, chickens, a cow, bunnies & more) where there is a milking contest you can try. On the weekends, jump on a wagon ride which is included with admission. Moonlight Madness is another high point on the farm where you can challenge the maze under the stars. Admission is until 9:00 pm for this event, but all other activities close at 5:00 pm. Only the big maze is open at night.

PARKS AND RECREATION:

Quechee State Park

Quechee State Park offer spectacular views of the Quechee Gorge. Formed by glacial activity approximately 13000 years ago, this gorge is the focal point of the park and is Vermont’s deepest gorge. The park is also a popular destination since it’s close to many upper valley attractions. If you would like to stay in the park, it has spacious campsites for overnight visits. Besides hiking and camping, other activities include volleyball, horse shoes and fishing in the Ottauquechee River.

Silver Lake State Park

Enjoy this park’s picnic grounds and camping area under the canopy of fall foliage. Its proximity to Woodstock and other central Vermont tourist destinations makes it ideal for family vacations. The park encompasses the northern shoreline of 84-acre Silver Lake, which is popular for paddling and quieter recreation, with only occasional motorboats passing by.
