Tomten Farm and Sanctuary Giving Horses A Home For 10 Years

Mar 18, 2024 12:41PM ● By Elise Renaud

Tomten Farm and Sanctuary is thrilled to have officially welcomed their second senior equid this year. She is a 28 year old mini-mare who stands at just 30 inches tall and 178 pounds.

For the last 10 years, a local farm and sanctuary has been giving the unwanted, unaffordable, and unadoptable horses a place to call home. It is now working to help senior horses in need.

"There's a real need for senior horse sanctuary and hospice, especially now," Jenifer Vickery, founder of Tomten Farm and Sanctuary, said in a release. "Whether these seniors find their way to us for a few years, a few months or simply for the final gift of humane euthanasia, Tomten wants to be here for them providing food, shelter and palliative care as needed."

The nonprofit helps to provide peace, protection, and possibility for senior horses in need with the help of The Dobbin Fund. The fund was inspired by Dobbin R. Bergerlind, a beloved Belgian draft horse that was surrendered to the Haverill, NH nonprofit.

Tomten has over 20 horses under its care. This year, it added its first senior horse named Willow Whitefeather. She is a 26-year-old quarter horse mare that was living under a tarp this weather. Her veterinarian, Karri Mitton, contacted Tomten for help. With the help of its supporters, Willow now has a forever home.

"There's a real need for senior horse sanctuary and hospice, especially now," Vickery said. "Whether these seniors find their way to us for a few years, a few months or simply for the final gift of humane euthanasia, Tomten wants to be here for them providing food, shelter and palliative care as needed."
