According to the board of organization, Paul Guidone, general manager of the Hanover Co-op, will retire next month, on April 29. Guidone, 64, cited personal and professional reasons for leaving his post, including assisting his wife’s role in taking care of aging relatives, supporting his son in the military who is soon to be deployed overseas, and wishing to be less active in his business and finance career.

Guidone indicated that the time is right for the Co-op to transition to a new general manager since many of his initiatives will have been completed. These include upgrades at the main Lebanon store, developing a plan with Vermont Energy Investment Corp. to achieve net-zero emissions, reviewing compensation levels for employees, and reporting 2021 financial results and budgeting for 2022. Guidone also noted that six of the Co-op’s board seats are expected to turn over, which might enable the next general manager to establish his or her own relationship with its members.

Guidone’s impending retirement comes as no surprise to Nick Clark, president of the Hanover Consumer Cooperative Society board, who had hired Guidone as an interim general manager in early 2020 before the position became permanent.

Clark has praised Guidone for establishing the Co-op on a “firm footing” and for being a clear communicator and proactive with employees, members, and the board. Clark said the board will form a search committee for a new general manager as soon as possible.

Guidone joined the Co-op in 2016 as Chief Financial Officer after a career working in financial management and banking. He later served as Strategic Advisor to former General Manager Ed Fox. He informed the Co-op board of his decision to retire on October 31, 2021.

“He is leaving the Co-op better than he found it and on solid footing, setting the stage for the success of our next General Manager,” Clark noted on the Co-op’s website. “We wish Paul all the best for his retirement and thank him for his service to our cooperative and our community.” As of early March, the position has not been filled, according to Guidone.
